  2. Wow Kelvin, that was a swift response!! Thanks for your comment and invitation. I’ll gladly add it tomorrow, but need to get some sleep now. I should be in bed! Hehe

No this is Nik Color Efex Pro’s ‘Tonal Contrast’ filter – after blending has been done. I tried LucisArt but I think the Tonal Contrast filter offers more control.

Hi Marek. great shot. I really like the symmetry and the organised randomness of all those lines! – actually there’s something about all those lines and angles that just keeps me looking at it.
It’s maybe a whisker too sharp for my eye but I love everything else about it including the colours – it would have been easy to crank the saturation here, but your colours feel very natural. Well done.
Thanks for the recipe info too, it’s always interesting to read what the process was.

  9. Thanks for the comments and scores all! :)

Cheers Michael. I think I might have slightly overdone it with the sharpening (last thing I did after resizing was some sharpening with Nik Sharpener). I’ll watch that next time. It’s that and flickr seems to bump up the sharpness just a tad for the standard view you see above.

No probs re the ‘recipe’ (LOL good word for it! :D )

  16. great symmetry marek! how coincidence of you & kelvin to post almost the same shot almost the same time! i almost got a shock haha!

  17. Thanks Artie. I was going for the symmetrical look with this one. It wasn’t 100% symmetrical out of camera (although not too far off) but a small amount of rotation and cropping fixed that right up!

Yeah I just looked at Kelvin’s photos again and found the one you were talking about! I guess being a public place in the city, it’s only a matter of time before we will all see similar pics in each other’s photostreams! :)

  18. DanielKHC says:

Superbly composed with the symmetry! Excellent job with the panorama!

Seen on your photo stream. (?)

  19. Thank you Daniel!

Just a slight correction – this wasn’t actually a pano itself, just one frame from a (failed) pano. This is a blend of 5 frames using my Canon EF-S 10-22mm lens. :)

  20. philwarner says:

360 panos are fun. Once you get through the learning curve on how to shoot and stitch them you should go back here again.

Can your 40D shoot 5 bracketed shots like a Nikon with one press of the shitter or did you manually adjust the camera shutter speed between shots? I have a Canon 30D and I tried bracketing 6 shots but the camera moved a few pixels during my changing of the shutter speed. I had to manually realign the frames in PS before blending them. My next camera might have to be a Nikon.

  21. Hey Phil. Thanks for the comment!

The 40D can’t do 5 bracketed shots in a row like some Nikons, but I can do 3, spaced 2 stops apart at 6.5fps in burst mode. If I shoot RAW (which I always do), then I can effectively have 5 frames one stop apart in about half a second. Using live view and a remote release this allows for full 360s with absolute minimal movement.

Apart from this image, I haven’t done any 360 panos before. I think they’d be easier with an even wider lens, but I probably just need some practice. :)

BTW the Canon EOS-1D (or 1Ds) Mark III has a custom function where you can set it to bracket as many images as you want in a single frame! Perhaps save up a bit more and go for that one?? :P

  22. Dylan Toh says:

great shot marek – I was eying that shot too lol.
I’ve not tried vertoramas before but this certainly looks like a decent shot to try it on. my impression of yours and kelvin’s photo will be up one day too hehe

  23. Hehe for sure. Get out there and keep shooting! As always I’d be keen to see the end result!

This isn’t actually a vertorama though. It’s a single image at 10mm on the 40D (ie; 16mm equivalent). I’d like to try a vertorama at some stage though as I have all the necessary equipment!

I started shooting 360° panos with the 10-22mm lens and it took 2 rows of shots. After buying the Sigma 10mm fisheye it’s the only lens I use for panos.

  25. Phil – I think I’ll have to get a fisheye before I attempt any more 360 panos. As you mentioned it just takes too many shots with a regular 10mm lens!
